• Fast estimation of coupled multiphysics phenomena for reentry vehicles is developed. • Explicit, time-marching coupling scheme is adopted in proposed model. • Roughness-induced boundary layer transition model is introduced in proposed model. • Temporal lag between thermal load and cumulative material recession is identified.
