• A novel fault location method for distribution networks based on an improved quantum ant colony algorithm (IQACA) is proposed. • The method includes an information self-correction strategy and hierarchical positioning model to improve fault tolerance and speed. • The fault location problem is transformed into a path selection problem, leveraging the optimization capabilities of IQACA. • Comparative testing demonstrates superior optimization performance of IQACA in distribution networks of different scales. • The effectiveness of the proposed model is validated through simulation experiments, outperforming other algorithms.
