FERONIA orchestrates plasma membrane nanoclusters for plant thermotolerance

As sessile beings, plants rely on intrinsic mechanisms to respond to temperature fluctuations, but how the plant cell membrane contributes to heat adaptation remains poorly understood. Wang et al. found that the receptor kinase FERONIA acts as a thermal switch in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Moderate heat activates FERONIA, which then clusters into sterol-rich patches and recruits signaling components (see the Perspective by Davis and Ronald). At extreme temperatures, the clusters disassemble, preventing unproductive overactivation of stress signaling. These findings reveal membrane organization as a tunable mechanism for adapting plant responses to heat stress. —Unnati Sonawala and Madeleine Seale
