Abstract

This instrumental case study explores how Felix, a Filipinx-American (FilAm) high schooler, negotiated science, FilAm, and other salient identities. The theoretical framing centered on sociological perspectives of identity, intersectionality, structure-agency dialectic, and model minority myth and colonial mentality associated with FilAms. The findings articulate complex interactions between Felix’s science and FilAm identities as his experiences and the dominant storylines permeated identity interactions. Felix’s science identity mediated his queer and FilAm identities and provided him with a way to reconcile being FilAm and “not straight.” Moreover, Felix constructed a science role model identity bringing together his experiences as a FilAm science student and dominant storylines prevalent in the FilAm community that he wanted to change. This study calls for teachers to attend to differing roles science may play in their students’ lives, and to create spaces and places for students to make sense of science vis-à-vis their multiple identities.
