• This study reports the first fine-mapping of the trichome trait locus MiTT to a 421 -kb region on chromosome 2 of Matthiola incana. • MiEGL3 (MIN02G0264) is identified as the first candidate gene via gene annotation and sequence variation analysis in M. incana. • Develop InDel markers linked to the first fine-mapped locus, enabling marker-assisted breeding for the trichome trait in M. incana.
