• We design a five-coordinated hydrogel by combining polyvinylamine and copper sulfate. • The five-coordinated copper hydrogel shows good self-adhesion and ionic conductivity. • The five-coordinated mechanism has been verified by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory. • This five-coordination hydrogel can be used for health monitoring and human-machine interaction.
