• Hysteretic nonlinear vibration of beams is analyzed for flexural mode NRUS. Relevant formulae for the flexural mode NRUS are derived. • Classical nonlinearity parameters can be derived from NRUS experiments. • Hysteresis parameters from transient vibration signal require absolute calibration. • The origin of strain-dependent properties is clarified.
