• This review comprehensively elaborates on the structure/adsorption mechanisms of FCDI Electrode materials. • This review emphasizes the structure-selectivity relationship among various existing electrode materials. • This review analysis the current challenges regarding to charge transfer limitations, selectivity, and cycling stability. • This review provides a targeted perspective for the specific and efficient removal of heavy metals, phosphates, and radionuclides from complex wastewater of FCDI technology.
