• A combined experimental system for Al/Ep impact ignition is established by integrating a light gas gun, high-speed camera, pyrometer. • Synchronous collection of hotspot images, quantitative analysis of flame area and recording of radiation temperature are realized for Al/Ep impact tests. • The mechanism of hotspot formation and evolution in Al/Ep materials under impact loading is analyzed.
