• The influence of inter-flaw angle on the macroscopic mechanical response of granite was revealed. • The evolution of Mode I and Mode II SIFs at rock-bridge flaw tips was quantitatively characterized using the DIC-Williams method. • The SIF correlation between rock-bridge flaw tips was found to change from weak to strong after 84% of the peak load. • With increasing inter-flaw angle, the promoting effect of Mode I SIF increased, whereas the inhibiting effect of Mode II SIF weakened. • Multifractal analysis revealed differences in strain-field heterogeneity evolution under different inter-flaw angles.
