The impact of natural resource dependence (NRD) on economic growth remains a core topic in economics research, directly influencing the long-term economic sustainability of countries and regions. This paper investigates the relationship between NRD and economic growth using data from prefecture-level cities in China. The findings indicate that NRD impedes economic growth, affirming the existence of the resource curse. However, this inhibitory effect is partially alleviated through increased levels of technological innovation and human capital. Additionally, heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact of NRD on economic growth varies according to geographic location, resource characteristics, urban level, intensity of environmental regulation, and institutional quality. These findings highlight the intricate effects of NRD on economic growth and underscore the importance of enhancing technological innovation and human capital. They also provide theoretical support for developing relevant policies and assist cities in crafting more tailored economic development strategies.
