From knowledge to cognition: Digital-intelligent dual transformation and the quantity-quality transformation of green innovation

Advancing the quantity-quality transformation of green innovation (QQT-GI) is pivotal for attaining sustainable green innovation. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, this study establishes a “knowledge-cognition” analytical framework to examine how the dual transformation of digitalization and intelligence (DTDI) influences corporate green innovation. Using a large language model to identify corporate DTDI practices, we conduct empirical analyses based on 48,503 time-individual observations from Chinese A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2024. The results show that DTDI acts as a critical engine for shifting corporate green innovation from a quantity-chasing to a quality-oriented paradigm. This transformation facilitates the accumulation and integration of green knowledge, which strengthens corporate perceptions of environmental governance responsibility, green innovation opportunity, and green innovation efficacy, thereby redirecting green innovation objectives. The positive impact of DTDI on green innovation quality (GIQ) is amplified by appointing executives with green experience or higher education, or by improving the local business environment. In contrast, heightened compliance risk weakens this effect. Moreover, implementing DTDI in non-state-owned enterprises or heavily polluting industries proves more effective in fostering the transition from green innovation quantity (GIQu) to GIQ. Further analysis indicates that the integration of green innovation knowledge across entities and the cross-boundary fusion of digital and green innovation knowledge are key sources through which DTDI enhances corporate cognition of green development. These findings highlight potential sustainability challenges posed by the rapid growth of GIQu in the digital-intelligent era, offering a theoretical basis for moving corporate green innovation practices beyond symbolic compliance toward substantive quality enhancement.
