• Functional characterization of a germacrene D-4-ol synthase (CcTPS3) from C. coccinea var. mollis. • The product profile of CcTPS3 is host dependent and is influenced by variations in pH • Engineered E. coli achieved titers of 35 mg/L α-cadinol and 17 mg/L τ-muurolol. • Found that τ-muurolol and α-cadinol possess lipid-lowering activity.
