Abstract

• A low-cost adsorbent was synthesized, achieving 93% recovery of phosphate. • The Langmuir and the intraparticle models were the best for describing the adsorption isotherm and kinetics, respectively. • BET test showed that the surface area declined from 13 to less than 1 g/m2, indicating the adsorption. • FT-IR and SEM confirmed the depletion of functional groups and a clear alteration in the surface and internal structure of the adsorbent. • Phosphate-loaded Lote leaves were capable of causing mortality among laboratory rats.
