To prevent the precipitation of inorganic scale in pipelines and reservoirs during water flooding, the strategy of synthesis first and then modification was adopted in this study, and the precise grafting of polymer chains on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CQDs) was realized. The introduction of multiple function groups significantly enhanced the scale inhibition efficiency of the material and the migration ability of scale particles in the reservoir pores, thereby effectively improving the water injection efficiency. First, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were prepared through a one-step hydrothermal method. Then, the polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) was covalently bonded onto the surface of N-CQDs through an amidation reaction, successfully constructing the PESA/N-CQDs scale inhibitor. TEM, XPS, and FT-IR characterizations confirmed the successful synthesis of PESA/N-CQDs as well as their morphology and microstructure. Static scale inhibition and core flow evaluation experiments demonstrated that PESA/N-CQDs exhibited significantly enhanced scale inhibition effects compared to PESA and N-CQDs at low concentrations. When the dosage was 20 mg/L, the scale inhibition efficiency against CaCO3 reached 92.39%. This scale inhibitor integrated functional groups such as carboxyl (-COOH), hydroxyl (-OH), and amide (-CONH-) and inhibited the formation of CaCO3 scale through the synergistic effect of chelation solubilization and lattice distortion.
