Generalized SSH model with staggered field

The ground state phase diagram of a generalized one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is studied. The model takes into account staggered hoppings along the chain between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor lattice sites as well as a staggered field. The phase diagram includes a topological phase with two zero energy localized edge modes and a non-trivial phase (NTP). In the NTP localized edge modes with different energies are realized. The Zak number nu(u) is a function of the staggered field amplitude u. The staggered field splits the zero energy edge modes, and the invariant becomes nu=12[nu(u)+nu(-u)]. In the staggered field, the phase transition between the NTP and the trivial phase (in which the edge modes are absent) occurs without gap closing, but the nu-invariant changes abruptly.
