• Climate humidification mitigated greening-induced soil drying on the Loess Plateau. • Drought trends intensified with average SWS declining by 0.65 cm yr−1 before 2000. • Increasing precipitation led to an average SWS rise of 1.3 mm yr−1 after 2000. • Vegetation restoration reduced soil water (−0.07 cm yr−1) across 68% of the region. • Greening decreased soil water by 216% and climate change increased it by 220% compared to the agricultural period.
