• Inclusions in Canadian diamonds are H2O-poor like in Africa and Russia. • Canadian mantle xenoliths are more H2O-rich than inclusions in Canadian diamonds. • Thermodynamic modelling predicts H2O-rich fluid at diamond formation conditions. • H2O-poor inclusions require equilibrium with fluids with low H2O activity. • Diamonds likely form from carbonatitic and hydrous-carbonated silicate melts.
