• A UWB-based heavy lifting localization system was developed for modular building. • Two optimization models were developed for UWB (non-) line-of-sight localization. • Around 30 cm accuracy was achieved in (non-) line-of-sight localization within 1 ms. • The system was tested in lab and real-life modular construction site environments. • The findings should stimulate the adoption of smart and safe modular construction.
