• Hydroxyapatite/titania compacts supported growth of calcium titanate hydroxide nanosheet nanoflower arrays. • The growth of nanosheet nanoflower arrays was template−/additive-free. • The formation of nanosheet nanoflower arrays was correlated with Ca ions provided by hydroxyapatite. • Nanosheet nanoflower arrays were biocompatible to support cell adhesion and proliferation. • Nanosheet nanoflower arrays supported the adsorption and release of therapeutic drugs.
