• An economical filtered TPV strategy was proposed for applications. • A complete GaSb TPV system with planar emitters was operated up to 1800 K. • A peak efficiency of 32.1 ± 0.6% for the GaSb cell was measured. • Three emitters were compared in a complete ultra-high-temperature TPV system. • The need for highly selective emitters was reduced by external filtering.
