• Upconversion emission of Tm3+/Yb3+ ions investigated in CdF2 single crystals. • Multi-band fluorescence intensity ratios enable ratiometric thermometry. • Maximum relative sensitivity of 2.14 % K-1 is obtained. • High temperature resolution of 0.20 K is achieved. • CdF2 proves a promising host for luminescent temperature sensing.
