• We introduce adipic dihydrazide (ADH) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive. • The ZnSO4 (ZSO) + ADH electrolyte forms a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer. • The Zn//NH4V4O10 batteries maintain a capacity retention rate of 71.20 % after 2000 times cycling at 5 A g−1.
