Cancer cells acquire mitochondria through multiple routes and from various donor cell types in an organized manner. Therapeutic strategies that target the intercellular transfer of mitochondria may help block cancer progression. In the context of cancer, although not exclusive, neurons represent a prevalent source of mitochondria from the tumor microenvironment. We can speculate that the prevalence of nerve-to-cancer transfer of mitochondria could underscore a systemic role of the nervous system in energy allocation and tumor progression.
