• This research makes three important contributions. • First, it provides novel insights into the relationship between AI and energy efficiency. • Second, we assess the mediating role of GTFP and SCE in the relationship between supply chain digitalization and energy efficiency. • Third, to ensure a more comprehensive conclusion, we conduct a multi-faceted heterogeneity analysis of the impact of supply chain digitalization on energy efficiency. • Overall, the results highlight the significant potential of AI to drive improvements in energy efficiency, particularly for certain types of businesses and specific regions. Consequently, this research bears significant implications for policy-making regarding the promotion of enterprise digitization.
