• The synergistic reduction of pollution and carbon emissions is measured using a global super-efficiency EBM model. • Digital technology innovation has a U-shaped impact on urban synergistic reduction of pollution and carbon emissions. • Energy efficiency, energy structure optimization and government environmental attention are indirect influence paths. • Heterogeneous effects are explored based on city size and low-carbon city pilot policy.
