Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
Spatial memory is crucial for many animals' daily lives. In recent years, researchers have begun to link performance on spatial cognitive tasks with life-history outcomes in the wild, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the nature of selection on spatial memory. Here, we review the diverse study systems and methodologies employed to measure individual differences in spatial memory performance and assess the current evidence for selection on spatial memory in natural populations. We find some evidence for directional selection, although selection may not act equally on all individuals, with sex appearing to mediate the strength and/or direction of selection in at least some species. We recommend that future researchers carefully select which aspects of spatial memory to measure and consider the application of test batteries to ensure the convergent validity of measures. Finally, only some studies account for the putative behavioral targets of selection for spatial memory - we suggest that quantifying the behaviors underpinned by spatial memory will be crucial to bridge the gap between individual variation in spatial memory performance and life history outcomes.
