• Hydrogen production by methane pyrolysis ensures consistently lower CO2 emissions than conventional steam reforming • An energetically self-sufficient process can be designed but results in higher emissions • Recycling unreacted methane ensures the lowest CO2 emissions at the expense of an increased energy duty • Zero and negative carbon footprints can be reached with a suitable fraction of biomethane in the feed
