• Failure mechanisms of composite eggshells under external pressure were elucidated. • Composite eggshells were fabricated using lay-up process with high geometric precision. • Performance ratio of lay-up eggshells was 2.29 times that of filament-wound eggshells. • Semianalytical model accounting for shape index, defects, and thickness ratio was derived.
