The increasing availability of graphics-oriented personal computers for undergraduate education is making it more attractive to develop instructional software for complementing both classroom lectures and related coursework. A mix of media such as text, graphics, sound and video can be linked together using a variety of courseware authoring systems. These authoring systems employ hypermedia concepts to set up multiple connecting pathways though a large body of information, making it possible to easily jump from one related topic to another. To effectively use hypermedia, both educators and software designers need to be aware of the challenges that will be faced in integrating courseware into a traditional classroom environment. This paper explores the potential of developing hypermedia-based courseware for power engineering undergraduate education. This is accomplished by first outlining the deficiencies of the conventional classroom lecture environment that can be compensated for by properly designed courseware. An authoring system for developing hypermedia-based applications is also described. Finally, a program developed for an introductory power engineering course is used to demonstrate the potential uses of hypermedia-based courseware.
