Plastics undeniably play a major role in everyday life, considering their broad applications, from packaging to electronics, automotives, and even space applications. Some of the most common plastics used in the aforementioned applications are polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). Both of them belong to the “family” of polyolefins. The wide use of plastics results in the generation of huge amounts of plastic waste globally. Unfortunately, until now, only a small part of that waste has been recycled due to many difficulties in the process, while large amounts are still landfilled. However, inappropriate handling of plastic waste can cause serious environmental issues. Taking these factors into account, along with stricter regulations with regard to the management of plastic waste, many researchers all over the world are investigating possible sustainable approaches for the recovery and recycling of plastic waste. Due to the importance of this issue, the current work focuses on two polyolefins, PP and PE, and on processes that can be applied for their recycling via thermal pyrolysis. First, emphasis is given to the methods that can be used for the identification of these types of polymers when present in plastic waste, and then their recycling is analyzed in detail, along with parameters, such as the type of polymer, that affect the products’ distribution.
