• We reformulated landing ellipse search as an optimization problem on suitability maps. • We developed a continuous optimization framework for landing ellipse identification. • We adopted Particle Swarm Optimization as a representative continuous search strategy. • PSOS provides an adjustable trade-off between solution quality and computational cost.
