Abstract

In this paper, a novel method is proposed to identify oscillation-vulnerable buses by applying the Barkhausen criterion to an impedance-based reflection-coefficient analysis in power systems. The proposed approach computes the magnitude and phase of the reflection coefficient from the relationship between the Thevenin impedance of the system seen from a bus and the load impedance and analyses variations in the reflection-coefficient phase under changes in operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulations on the IEEE standard test systems, namely the IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems. It is also confirmed that buses exhibiting abrupt changes in the reflection-coefficient phase with respect to operating-point variations may become vulnerable to oscillations according to the Barkhausen criterion.
