Abstract

• The impact of ferrite/martensite (F/M) interface on nanohardness is reported. • For small indentation depths, an increase in nanohardness is observed near the F/M interface. • The increase in nanohardness follows a scaling law with the surface geometric distance to F/M interface. • A Strain Gradient Plasticity (SGP) model is used to explain the localized hardening behavior. • The increase in nanohardness is correlated to the estimated GND density near the F/M interface.
