Abstract

• Actual site sediment properties were characterised and used in CFD simulations. • Identified erosion hotspots were strongly correlated to local turbulence intensity. • Particle fragmentation significantly reduced sediment size from inlet to outlet. • Non-spherical particles caused higher erosion rates than spherical particles. • Findings support erosion mitigation and enhanced Pelton turbine efficiency.
