• Among social insects, ants have received relatively lower levels of examination regarding the impact of pesticides. • Pesticides cause a range of behavioural changes and impacts colony living by negatively influencing foraging, fecundity and survival. • Direct exposure to pesticides as well as exposure through indirect routes resulted in different levels of interference on the patterns of intra and interspecific interactions. • A combination of pesticide and pathogens resulted in enhancing the impact of the pathogens in most cases. • Some studies found no significant effect based on behavioural endpoints. A few showed the resilience of ants to pesticide exposure. • Future research needs to focus on ecologically relevant exposure routes and colony-level assessment using an integrative behavioural and ecotoxicological framework.
