Impact of phenological stages in durum wheat cultivars related to temperature and rainfall on dynamics of Sitobion avenae and its predator Coccinella septempunctata in the Constantine Region, Eastern Algeria

In cereal fields, it is crucial to manage the aphid Sitobion avenae, which carries viruses. The Coccinella septempunctata is an important natural enemy of aphids in many different cereal fields. The population dynamics of this aphid and its predator were studied at Constantine on six durum wheat varieties (Bousselam, Cirta, Gta dur, Simeto, Vitron and Waha) during two successive cropping years (2012/2013; 2013/2014). With the exception of Vitron in 2014, all wheat varieties were infested by this aphid. The highest relative abundances (RA) were observed on Waha in 2013 (23.54%) and Simeto in 2014 (49.41%), while the lowest RA were on Bousselam in 2013 (9.83%) and Waha in 2014 (5.88%). The C. septempunctata was observed on all varieties, with a higher RA than its prey on Cirta (22.45%) in 2013 and Vitron (22.03%) in 2014. The S. avenae infestation was found during the end of tillering stage. A peak in the average population was detected at the heading stage both in 2013 (41.9 +/- 42.5) and 2014 (4.66 +/- 4.36). The difference in average values between the two species, according to their phenological stage, is highly significant (P < 0.0001) in both years. Heading stage coincided with the month of May in both years, which related the maximum and average temperatures conducive to a suitable population increase of the biological stages of this aphid and its predator, with the exception of C. septempunctata adults in 2013, which were developed in June. The results confirm the positive correlation in numbers and activity between the two species studied in 2014.
