• Twinning-coordination strain mechanisms distinctly affect magnesium alloy mechanical properties via twinning behavior. • The influence of different twin dimensions on the annealing strengthening behavior was revealed. • Quasi-in-situ EBSD reveals detailed compressive strain and twinning evolution in VZ21 alloys.
