Abstract

• A bioinspired multi-layered shell-foam core hybrid sandwich composites is developed. • Dual pre-treatments is proposed to improve face-core interface strength. • Variation of failure modes and damage mechanism are explored. • The presented structure achieves a balance among high strength, excellent impact resistance and pedestrian protection performance.
