• Snow cover duration decreased at −0.40 d yr−1 on the western Greater Khingan Range. • NPP shows seasonal differentiation: 95.5% area increases in spring but decreases in summer. • Snow effects on NPP exhibit clear ecological zonation and cross-seasonal lag effects. • Snow regulates NPP indirectly via soil hydrothermal conditions and vegetation phenology. • Snowmelt water supply dominates in grasslands, while thermal limitation dominates in forests.
