• Conventional Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) experiment is largely heuristic. • Adaptation of a nonlinear controller in PLL can improve its locking capabilities. • A nonlinear controller reduces the tuning effort, making the PLL less heuristic. • A less heuristic or systematic PLL is promising for application to complex systems.
