• An improved Newton-Raphson-based optimizer is proposed for engineering problems. • A dynamic fitness-distance balance selection method is used to boost search ability. • A gap evolution strategy is proposed to help the algorithm jump out of local optima. • CEC2022 tests confirm the proposed algorithm outperforms nine competitors. • This algorithm applies successfully to multiple engineering application problems.
