• Al addition induces B2 precipitation and C15 → C14 Laves transformation in RHEAs. • Uniform C14 Laves and B2 precipitates enhance the wear resistance of RHEAs. • Nanoindentation evaluates the contribution of each phase to wear resistance. • Dense Al2O3 + Ta2O5 composite glaze layer forms on the alloy at 800 °C. • Excessive Al causes brittleness and degrades wear resistance.
