Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
Three locally available biomasses namely bagasse, corn stalk and leaves (CSL) and coconut shell (CS) were subjected to torrefaction in this study. Three parameters were varied namely temperature residence time and particles sizes to determine the optimum torrefaction conditions. The enhancement factor which is a ratio between the GCV of torrefied biomass to GCV of untorrefied biomass was found to be higher for the larger particle size biomass, with a value of 1.58 versus 1.21, 1.64 versus 1.56, 1.68 versus 1.62 for the particle size B compared to A particle size for bagasse, CSL and CS respectively. However; after taking mass loss into consideration, it was found that for bagasse the highest energy yield was 98.4% at a temperature of 225 degrees C and a residence time of 20 min for the larger particle size (0.9 mm). For CSL, the optimum conditions were at 225 degrees C and 20 min residence time for a particle size of 0.9 mm where an energy yield of 98.9% was obtained. For CS the highest energy obtained was 99.9% for particle size A at conditions of 225 degrees C and 20 min residence time and an increase in GCV from 18.8 MJ/kg to 20.8 MJ/kg. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
