• A binary method is proposed to improve the SCC resistance of marine engineering steel. • Anti-AD mechanism originates from the coupling of microstructural optimization and a compact composite rust layer. • Anti-HE mechanism arises from surface barrier inhibiting hydrogen absorption and bulk multiscale hydrogen trapping.
