• Design guidelines proposed for safe hydrogen storage in impure salt. • Density-based method enables accurate impurity quantification from core tests. • Impurities increase cohesion and tensile strength while reducing creep rates. • Higher impurity content limits plastic zones, displacement and shrinkage in caverns. • Laboratory creep tests systematically overestimate in situ deformation.
