• ZnxCoyZIF@ECEA was constructed by in-situ growth of ZnxCoyZIF on ECEA matrix • ZnxCoyZIF@ECEA exhibited excellent adsorption performance for CR and Cu2⁺ compared with monometallic ZIF-based aerogel • Zn0.33Co0.67ZIF@ECEA achieved synergistic adsorption for CR and Cu2⁺ in coexisting system • Synergistic adsorption involves π–π conjugation, H-bonding, electrostatic/coordination interactions and CR–Cu2⁺ bridging effect • Zn0.33Co0.67ZIF@ECEA presented excellent dynamic adsorption performance for CR
