• An in-situ X-ray imaging system was developed to capture weld pool dynamics during underwater submerged arc welding. • The interactions among the external cavity, arc behavior, droplet transfer, and weld pool dynamics were systematically established. • The formation mechanism of internal bubbles and their role in promoting weld pool flow were elucidated. • An epoxy resin adhesive with excellent waterproof performance was demonstrated to significantly improve weld quality, providing guidance for process optimization
