Abstract

• First report of the existence of an increase in powder bed packing density occurring at higher layer number (5 to 10). • Large-scale multi-layer powder spreading DEM simulations for metal additive manufacturing. • The DEM results show that a significant amount of powder is removed from the powder bed during the spreading of subsequent layers.
