We consider a general family of statistical functionals and introduce a formula to obtain the corresponding influence function. The method can be effectively applied to derive in a simple way the influence function of large classes of inequality indices, which encompasses the majority of the inequality measures usually adopted by field researchers. In many cases, our findings also provide new explicit expressions for the influence function of such inequality measures.
